Abhay Mattson

I design brands, campaigns and websites that get people through the door.

Logos, event promotions, social content, illustration and fast, mobile-friendly websites for breweries, shops and local businesses in Hampton Roads and beyond. 15+ years in IT means the technical side is handled too.

  • Open to marketing & digital design roles
  • Taking freelance projects
Halloween flyer with a haunted orange sky, Friday October 29th, 4 to 10pm.
Cookbook front cover: 'I Got Reincarnated on Earth as a Computer Nerd, So Naturally, I Wrote a Cookbook' in glossy game-style lettering above a kitchen counter with sushi and an open book.
Vintage-style poster with an ornate border and a pig illustration announcing Pig Pickin' on October 9th at 2pm, presented by Coastal Fermentory and Ironclad Distilling.

Mattsons' Kitchen home page: dark layout with the headline 'No 15-page story about a trip to Mexico. Just the recipe.', blue buttons and the cookbook cover.

Mattsons' Kitchen

The companion web app for my published cookbook. The goal was the opposite of most recipe sites: no life story, no pop-ups, just the recipe, fast, on any phone.

  • 66 one-page recipes, each with a vegetarian option, plus search and category filters
  • Installs to a phone's home screen like an app and keeps working offline
  • Step-by-step how-to guides and a vegetarian ingredient converter
  • Dark, food-first visual system with one blue accent, tuned for readability in the kitchen

My role: concept, writing, art direction and launch

Coastal Fermentory website hero: the brewery name in green over a dusk photo of the taproom.

  • Event campaigns: Pig Pickin', foosball and cornhole tournaments
  • Plus an illustrated coloring book for the brewery, with Hampton Roads themes and local landmarks.
Antique Artisans Market website: the arched logo over line-art antiques on a dark wood background, with a welcome paragraph.

Woodland Assault Studios

My indie studio for tabletop-gaming software. I designed and built three desktop apps for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition in C#/WPF, published on itch.io: the brand and app logos, the character art and every hand-designed interface for Monster Workbench and Player Workbench.

Monster Workbench’s pixel-art intro: hand-drawn sprite by sprite and choreographed in WPF with storyboard timelines and a timed script — circa 2017–2018, long before AI tools.

Portrait of Abhay Mattson

Designer with a technical edge

I'm Abhay (Abe) Mattson, a designer and marketer in Newport News, Virginia, with a background in marketing management that includes running social media for Verizon, a national brand serving millions of customers. Today I work in IT at Riverside Health System while moving into marketing and digital design full time. Since 2017 I've freelanced as Phat Buddha Digital, making logos, campaigns and websites for local businesses. Much of my work, from pixel art to interface code, was built by hand long before AI tools existed.
